How Symptoms of Perimenopause May Be Something Else.

What if it's not perimenopause you are going through...or at least not JUST Perimenopause?

If you are navigating changes in your body and emotions, you might be wondering if you are experiencing perimenopause. Perimenopause is a natural transition that marks the years leading up to menopause. During this time, your body’s hormone levels, especially estrogen and progesterone, begin to fluctuate. These hormonal shifts can cause a wide range of symptoms that affect your physical and emotional well-being.

Common perimenopause symptoms include weight gain, brain fog, anxiety, low motivation, irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and changes in libido. You may also notice difficulties with memory or concentration, weight changes, or increased anxiety. For many women, these symptoms can be disruptive and confusing, especially when they appear suddenly or seem to overlap with other health concerns. It's no wonder you think you are going crazy!

It is important to recognize that not every symptom you experience in your 30s, 40s, or 50s is automatically related to perimenopause. While hormonal imbalance is a key factor during this stage of life, similar symptoms can be caused by other underlying health issues. Thyroid disorders, chronic stress, nutritional deficiencies, chronic inflammation due to an underlying issue, blood sugar dysregulation, gut dysfunction, burnout, sleep apnea, or even certain medications can mimic perimenopause symptoms. For example, fatigue and mood changes might be linked to low thyroid function or vitamin deficiencies rather than shifting hormones. Irregular periods can sometimes signal polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other gynecological conditions.

For sure, hormones change as we age. But hormones don't operate in isolation. The ovaries, adrenals, thyroid, gut, immune system and the brain are all part of the same conversation.

Many of our patients come in thinking they are in perimenopause, but when digging further in the initial consultation, and if necessary, running a hormone panel, we discover, it's not perimenopause but the system trying to compensate for something else going on. Sometimes A+B does not equal C.

When the body has been running on stress, inflammation, overwork, undernourishment, and survival mode for years, symptoms often appear long before significant hormonal decline occurs.

Instead of asking, "how do I survive perimenopause?" perhaps, let's ask ourselves, "what is my body trying to tell me?"

Sometimes the most powerful approach isn't simply replacing hormones, especially in the beginning and if the other systems are off balance, it's helping the body heal by reminding it what to do when it comes to the foundations of health. Your symptoms are telling you something. Let's start listening to them.
